Blog: Access/Art
As we first discussed this champion blog idea I had one of those moments where I suddenly had no idea what I was passionate about - but it was more that I had no idea how to articulate what it is I'm passionate about. I knew what it was in my mind, but I didn’t know how to sum that up into a couple of words.
I’m passionate about getting
more people engaged in the arts ?
Access ?
…
Both of those felt close, but not quite right.
As someone working in the arts, I’ve heard so many people say:
“I’m not very creative”
“I’m not good at art”
“I wouldn’t understand what’s going on in a dance performance”
That’s what interests me. I don’t think there’s this inherent creativity that some people just have and other people don’t; sure some people might be more creative than others but we are all creative. Perhaps the possibility of having a career in the arts and selling work as an artist has brought with it a measure of success for people to compare themselves to? Is that why people might doodle, or noodle about on an instrument but not take it any further; for fear of not being good enough? At what point does creativity become art, and if we can help cultivate a stronger sense of creativity within people will we see an impact on engagement in the arts?
I don’t really know.
~ I think it’s important to be honest and admit that I don’t have enough knowledge to answer these questions. Joe Rogan mentions in one of his podcasts that people often view their thoughts and opinions as extensions of themselves, and so feel the need for them to be right and defend them. However, the Black Lives Matter movement sweeping across the world emphasises the need for us to admit when we don’t know, do our research and be open to what we find. How can we expect change otherwise? ~
These blog posts are going to be my way of sharing my exploration into this and involving you in the process. I want to know your thoughts, opinions and ideas, so I’ll start by asking you this:
