Queer Stories | Edinburgh

  • CC Blooms 23-24 Greenside Place Edinburgh, Scotland, EH1 3NQ United Kingdom (map)

These are the stories of the silenced.

From 1988 to 2000 Section 28 was in effect in Scotland, prohibiting the "promotion of homosexuality" by local authorities across Britain. A generation of LGBTQ+ people were abandoned, villainised and abused, and we can still see it’s impact today.

Part of the Year of Stories 2022, Shaper/Caper presents Queer Stories - a brand new pop-up performance that gives a voice to the silenced. It explores the impact of Section 28 on the Scottish LGBTQ+ community through dance and verbatim spoken word, inspired by our interviews with LGBTQ+ people who lived through the time.

Performed in queer-friendly spaces across Scotland, featuring choreography by the award-winning Thomas Small, Queer Stories beautifully blends lively action and tender vignettes that breathe life back into forgotten memories of the time.

After the performances, audiences are invited to share their own memories and stories, to further enrich this incredibly important oral history.

This event has been supported by the Year of Stories 2022 Community Stories Fund. This fund is being delivered in partnership between VisitScotland and Museums Galleries Scotland with support from National Lottery Heritage Fund thanks to National Lottery players.

These performances are FREE to attend. No tickets required - just drop in on the night!
